The Roundabout at Tiverton Casino Wins ACEC-RI Award
The Roundabout at Tiverton Casino, designed by Bryant Associates, received a 2021 Gold Star Award, Third Place Honor for Outstanding Professional Design Excellence from ACEC-RI. The project was honored at the annual meeting in Providence on June 28th.
The Twin River Management Group, Inc. owns and operates Rhode Island’s largest gaming and entertainment venue, the Twin River Casino. They planned to open a new facility in Tiverton, RI, however, traffic improvements to the intersection of William S. Canning Boulevard., Stafford Road, and Hurst Lane, where the entrance to their new facility would be located, were required. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) had a plan many years in the making to construct a roundabout at this intersection due to the high frequency of crashes and skewed geometry. The construction of the roundabout was still not scheduled for many years. In an excellent example of a public-private partnership, Twin River Management Group, Inc., the Town of Tiverton and RIDOT worked together to accelerate the completion of the roundabout.
Twin River hired Bryant Associates, who previously completed a Traffic Impact Analysis for the newly proposed casino and hotel, to design the roundabout. Bryant was able to design the roundabout and obtain the required permits in a short amount of time to allow for the opening of the roundabout prior to the scheduled opening of the casino. The roundabout successfully improved both traffic flow and safety for the intersection at the entrance to the 85,000 SF gaming facility, which includes an 84-room hotel and 1,100 surface parking spaces.
